As Washington has concentrated its power over the decades, it has used more and more excuses of information being classified. Which has an effect of making our government less and less democratic. The slow demise of democratic government and the rise of the state in its place. Secrecy is not consistent with democracy in any way. That is, except for special and temporary circumstances. And I don't believe we should trust politicians to police themselves with this issue. The courts don't seem to be doing a consistent job either. I would much prefer a random council of citizens chosen similar to how we pick court juries to determine what should temporarily remain secret. Maybe they serve a one year term and are convened whenever there is an FOIA request that is denied. Regardless of how it is accomplished, we need new laws which limit the secrecy of the state and improves the Freedom of Information Act and government transparency into documents and programs determined to be secret. Improved transparency is necessary to return to a functioning democracy.
